Final expense direct mail leads vs Facebook leads
By BuyFEXLeads · Updated
Final expense direct mail leads cost about $25 to $45 each, take 2 to 3 weeks to start coming back, and draw about 1% to 3% response per mailer. Facebook leads arrive in real time and cost about $19 to $38 on the vendor pages we checked. Mail takes more effort to return; Facebook is faster. We sell Facebook and Instagram leads only.
How does each source produce a lead?
Facebook (Meta) leads come from ads on Facebook and Instagram. A senior taps the ad and either fills out a short form inside the ad or goes to a web page or quiz. The lead exists the second they submit.
Direct mail leads come from printed mailers sent to a list of households, often a reply card. The senior fills it in by hand and mails it back, and the vendor sends you the returned card. Mailers vary; one mail program lists a snap pack with a spouse slot and a date of birth field, and a gift card mailer (Niche Market Insurers, checked September 27, 2026).
We sell Facebook and Instagram leads only: our own Meta ads send seniors to our quiz, where every lead confirms their phone with a text code. We don’t sell direct mail leads.
How do they compare on speed, cost and response?
| Facebook / Meta | Direct mail | |
|---|---|---|
| Time to first lead | Real time once ads run | About 2 to 3 weeks to first response (TTC Leads) |
| Price per exclusive lead | $19 to $38 on the vendor pages we checked; ours $30 to $40 | $25 to $45 (Aged Lead Store); $25 to $40 (InsureLeads, The Price Group) |
| Response rate | Not comparable: you pay per lead, not per mailer | 1% to 3% (TTC Leads; their FAQ says 1% to 2%); 1% to 1.5% nationally for one mail house (NMI) |
| How the lead arrives | Digital, by text, email, CRM or sheet | Returned card, passed on by the vendor |
| Geography | Spread across the area you buy | Clustered in the zip codes you mail |

Which source has more intent?
There is no clean study we can point to, so here is the trade-off in plain terms, plus one experienced agent’s view.
A mail reply takes effort: fill in a card by hand, find a mailbox. That effort is a signal. A Facebook lead takes a few taps, so it is quicker to give and quicker to forget. On the other side, a Facebook lead reaches you while the senior still has their phone in hand, and a mail card may be days old by the time you see it.
David Duford, who writes about selling final expense, wrote in January 2023 that seniors on Facebook are usually on smartphones, that Facebook leads sometimes have out-of-date contact information, and that the biggest problem setting appointments from them is getting the lead to pick up. He also wrote that he still holds that direct mail leads are “KING” (DavidDuford.com, checked September 27, 2026). That is one agent’s opinion, from a field sales point of view, and it is worth weighing against your own results.
Do they reach different seniors?
Somewhat. Facebook reaches seniors who use Facebook or Instagram, which skews toward people comfortable on a phone. Direct mail reaches whoever is on the mailing list, including seniors who aren’t online.
Geography differs too. Mail can saturate a handful of zip codes, which helps if you sell in the home and want appointments close together. Duford notes that Facebook leads spread out more, which meant long drives between rural appointments for him. If you sell by phone, spread matters much less.
Age ranges vary by vendor and campaign. Ask any vendor what ages they target and whether they filter out prospects over a carrier’s limit.
How should I work each kind of lead?
Facebook leads: call within minutes. The person just submitted and may not remember by tomorrow. Open by reminding them of the Facebook or Instagram ad, confirm the basics, and follow up over several days. See speed to lead and how to work final expense leads.
Direct mail leads: call as soon as the card reaches you, and mention the card they mailed back. The card often has more written detail, so review it before you dial. Mail works well for agents who set in-home appointments in a tight area.
Budgeting: mail usually means committing to mail drops up front and waiting weeks. NMI notes that starting direct mail “can be a bit expensive because you will need to drop mail weekly or biweekly” (NMI, checked September 27, 2026). Facebook leads bought per lead let you start smaller; ours start at 25 leads with no contract.
Free final expense leads: where they really come from
“Free” final expense leads for agents almost always come from an IMO, FMO or carrier, and they are paid for with your contract, your production or your commission. Three common shapes, from the programs’ own pages:
- Leads earned by production. Final Expense Brokerage says that for every $1,500 of net annualized life premium with its endorsed carriers, agents qualify for 1,000 final expense direct mail lead cards or 37 telemarketed leads. The first order needs at least three policies, two years of experience working final expense leads, and an appointment through them (Final Expense Brokerage).
- Leads that come with the contract. Brokers Alliance says its final expense “lead program is exclusive and comes with the contract” (Brokers Alliance). Empower Brokerage lists no-cost lead programs and notes most require being contracted with three to four carriers through them (Empower Brokerage).
- Leads financed by the company. Lincoln Heritage says its in-house lead program “is financed to our agents”; the page doesn’t spell out the terms (Lincoln Heritage).
The catch. Leads tied to a contract usually mean writing business where the program says, and hitting its numbers. One agent recruiting site puts it plainly: captive agents often earn lower commissions, 40% to 70%, but may get company-paid leads, while independent agents earn 80% to 120% and generate their own (Redbird Agents). Ask who owns the lead if you leave, and what happens when you miss a production target.
Generating your own is the other route: referrals, community events, or running your own ads. It costs time or ad spend instead of contract terms. Buying leads is the third: you pay per lead, keep your contracts, and owe nobody production. Ours are $30 to $40 each, no contract; see pricing.

Questions agents ask
Are Facebook final expense leads worse than direct mail?
Not across the board. Mail takes more effort to return; Facebook leads arrive in real time. Compare cost per sale with your own selling style.
How long do direct mail leads take to arrive?
Weeks. TTC Leads says its direct mail campaigns typically take 2 to 3 weeks from mailing to first responses, since the mailer has to be printed, delivered and returned.
Can I get free final expense leads?
Usually only through an IMO, FMO or carrier program, where leads are earned by production, come with a contract, or are financed against your commission. They are rarely free in practice: you pay with production requirements or a lower commission.
Does BuyFEXLeads sell direct mail leads?
No. We sell exclusive leads from our own Facebook and Instagram ads only.
Which is better for phone sales?
Real-time Facebook leads fit phone sales because you can call while interest is fresh and distance does not matter. Mail fits in-home selling in a tight area.

The agent orders leads and calls separately, from the same tokens. The caller's number shows on the agent's phone. Callers are people who dialed our number themselves: no call center, no screening, not live transfers. Every call is recorded. A bad call can get 6 tokens back. Missing 3 calls in a row costs 10 tokens and pauses calls until a request to turn them back on is approved. Callers are not quiz leads: they are not phone-verified and have no consent certificate.
