Speed to lead for final expense agents
By BuyFEXLeads · Updated
Call within 5 minutes. In the MIT and InsideSales.com lead response study, the odds of qualifying a web lead fell 21-fold when the first call came at 30 minutes instead of 5. A 2011 Harvard Business Review study found firms that responded within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify a lead as firms that waited another hour.
What does the research say about lead response time?
Two studies get quoted most. Both looked at web leads across many industries, not final expense specifically, and both are years old. They still line up with what agents see on the phone.
| Study | What they looked at | Main finding |
|---|---|---|
| “The Short Life of Online Sales Leads”, Harvard Business Review, March 2011 (Oldroyd, McElheran, Elkington) | 1.25 million sales leads at 29 B2C and 13 B2B U.S. companies | Firms that tried to contact a lead within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify it as firms that tried an hour later, and more than 60 times as likely as firms that waited 24 hours or longer. |
| Lead Response Management study (Professor James Oldroyd, MIT, with InsideSales.com) | Three years of data from six companies: 15,000+ leads, 100,000+ call attempts | The odds of qualifying a lead fell 21-fold when response time went from 5 to 30 minutes, and fourfold between 5 and 10 minutes. |

How fast do most companies actually respond?
Slowly. For the same HBR article, the researchers sent a test web lead to 2,241 U.S. companies. 37% responded within an hour, 16% within one to 24 hours, 24% took more than 24 hours, and 23% never responded at all. Among companies that answered within 30 days, the average response time was 42 hours.

The authors blamed ordinary habits: pulling leads from the CRM once a day instead of continuously, sales teams focused on their own prospecting, and rules that split leads among salespeople by geography and “fairness.” All three show up in final expense offices too.
Why do minutes matter so much for final expense leads?
A final expense web lead is a senior who tapped an ad, answered some questions, and hit submit. In the next few minutes they still have the phone in hand and remember what they asked for. An hour later they are doing something else. A day later a call from an unknown number looks like every other sales call they ignore.
With shared leads, speed also decides who gets the conversation, since several agents are dialing. With exclusive leads you are the only agent calling during the exclusive window, but the prospect’s attention still fades just as fast. Exclusivity protects you from other agents, not from the clock.
How do I set up to call within five minutes?
- Get alerts where you look. A text to your phone beats an email you check at lunch. Our leads arrive by text and email as soon as each one is assigned to you, plus the dashboard.
- Block time. Keep calling blocks open on the days leads are running, the way you would for appointments.
- Dial first, prepare second. Open with who you are and that they asked, then gather details. You can look up carriers after you have them talking.
- Pause when you can’t call. If you are on vacation or in a long appointment, pause delivery rather than let fresh leads sit. You can pause leads from your dashboard anytime.
- Follow up for days. The first minutes matter most, but not every lead answers the first call. See how to work final expense leads for a cadence.
What if I can’t call every lead within five minutes?
You won’t, and that’s fine. You will be on another call, driving, or at a kitchen table. The HBR numbers compare an hour with an hour later and with a day later, so a lead you reach in 20 minutes is still far better off than one you reach tomorrow.
When you miss the window, call the moment you are free, leave a short voicemail with your name, and send a text if your consent and state rules allow it. Then keep the lead on your list for several days. If you miss the window often, buy fewer leads at a time and match delivery to the hours you can actually call.
Does calling fast create compliance risk?
Speed doesn’t change the rules. Calling hours still apply: federal rules bar telemarketing calls before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m. in the prospect’s time zone, and some states end earlier. A lead that comes in at 10 p.m. waits until morning. Automated calls and texts need the right consent. Hand-dialing fast is the safe default.

Questions agents ask
What is speed to lead?
The time between a prospect submitting a form and your first attempt to contact them. For web leads, shorter is better, and research on web leads found big drops within the first hour.
Is the five-minute rule proven for final expense?
Not specifically. The studies behind it covered web leads across many industries. We cite them because they are the best-known research, not because they measured final expense.
How fast does BuyFEXLeads deliver a lead?
By text and email as soon as the lead is assigned to you, and in your dashboard. We pace delivery at up to 25 leads a week, no more than 5 a day, so you have time to call each one fast.
What if a lead comes in outside calling hours?
Wait until calling hours open in the prospect’s time zone and call first thing. Don’t call early to be first.

The agent orders leads and calls separately, from the same tokens. The caller's number shows on the agent's phone. Callers are people who dialed our number themselves: no call center, no screening, not live transfers. Every call is recorded. A bad call can get 6 tokens back. Missing 3 calls in a row costs 10 tokens and pauses calls until a request to turn them back on is approved. Callers are not quiz leads: they are not phone-verified and have no consent certificate. Calls are not exclusive. Details: https://buyfexleads.com/live-calls.
